Of course it was raining.

Every single time Romano would go out – for something stupid this time, a set of paints because his brother's set just didn't have the right colors for the painting, ve! – it would always be raining by the time he was on his way back. Grocery bag in hand, he began the long walk home.

He didn't bother to cover himself up – he'd get wet even if he did. The Italian walked down the street, watching his citizens scurrying to their homes. He turned another corner, now soaked in rain from head to toe. Stupid rain! he thought as he quickened his pace and ducked into an alleyway to take a shortcut. He was about halfway down the alley before he heard a low growl from ahead.

Romano stopped short. His gaze shifted to the cobbles of the ground, where a cat was standing menacingly.

It had fluffy, brown fur, accompanied by a darker chocolate-colored stripe along its back. The eyes of the male feline were a bright emerald color. However, Romano didn't notice these things, for the cat was hissing viciously at him. It was baring its teeth, and swishing its tail back and forth.

The Italian looked back at the animal warily before trying to walk around it. He immediately jumped back as the cat took a swipe at him with its claws.

"Stupid cat!" Romano snarled at the angry feline.

The cat hissed in reply, refusing to move an inch.

Romano was just about to kick the animal out of the way, until he noticed another small figure behind the little monster. He peered over the snarling cat and saw a smaller feline.

It was another cat, but obviously female. She had snow white fur, and a bright green headband tied around her head. Judging by this article of clothing, Romano figured that it had once been a housecat or something. The cat's eyes were gentle, and looked up at him in a friendly manner. It was lying down on the cobbles, a large gash visible on its side. Scarlet blood slowly poured out of it, mixing with the oncoming rain. The male cat stood protectively in front of her, still hissing at Romano.

The Italian stared. She's not going to survive out here if she keeps bleeding like that… he thought sadly.

After a few moments of hesitation, Romano decided that he wasn't going to stand around and let these stupid cats die.

His eyes darted around the narrow alley, searching for some kind of container. He found one lying near the street – a cardboard box. Romano quickly picked it up and brought it over to the cats. The male cat immediately hissed and arched its back, ready to attack the strange new object.

In a swift motion, Romano darted towards the feline and shoved it into the box from behind. He struggled to hold it upright as the animal writhed and growled within its prison. The white cat meowed softly from its place by the wall, still watching Romano calmly. He set the cardboard box down and cautiously stepped towards it.

As gently as he could, the Italian scooped the cat up in his arms. The blood stained Romano's hands a bit, but the rain would wash it off soon. The feline nuzzled into his chest as it began to purr. He knelt down next to the box and placed the cat in before the animal already inside could take another swipe at him. Satisfied with his work, Romano picked up the makeshift container and began to head towards the street.

Nyaa…

Suddenly, a symphony of concerned meows sounded from within the cardboard box at the small noise. Romano turned his head towards the source of the sound, and spotted a small figure behind another unwanted box. He walked towards it, and pushed the cardboard out of the way. This revealed a tiny kitten stumbling around its hiding place. It was a coffee-brown color with chocolate brown spots scattered about its fur. A thin curl sprouted out atop its forehead, indicating that it was an Italian cat. Romano figured from the uneasy meows coming from the box that the kitten belonged to the cats inside. He picked up the whining feline and tenderly placed it in the box with its parents.

Romano checked the alley for any more stray kittens before grabbing the cardboard box again and heading home.

"Vee~ Did you get my paints, fratello~?" Veneziano asked as his brother opened the front door.

"Yeah, they're right here," Romano replied, practically throwing the grocery bag at him.

The younger Italian grinned, clumsily catching it. "Thanks, Big Brother!"

"Whatever," Romano growled as he placed a rather large cardboard box on the kitchen table. Veneziano immediately lost interest in the paint set and flew over to it.

"What's in here, fratello?" he asked, giddy with excitement.

"Um… I-I found an injured cat… in an alley…" Romano said slowly, reaching up to open one of the cabinets.

"Ohh! I love cats!" Veneziano squealed. "How nice of you, fratello!"

"Shut up!!" Romano hissed, taking the First Aid Kit from its shelf. He put it down on the table next to the box. "I think they're housecats, so we're NOT keeping them!"

" 'Them'? You mean there's more than one?" Veneziano asked, his smile growing even wider.

"T-There's three. Two cats and a kitten."

"Aaww~! Can I see them?"

Romano began to open the box. "Just don't get in the way!"

The female cat looked up from snuggling her kitten when Romano lifted the flaps of the box. A low growl emitted from her partner as she was lifted into the air. The Italian carefully placed the injured feline onto the table as his younger brother peered down at the other two.

"They're adorable~!" Veneziano cried.

"Don't let them bite you," Romano hissed, using a wet cloth to wipe away blood from the cat's open wound. "They could have rabies or something."

"Veee…  Let's name the kitten Lovi."

"We are NOT naming them!!" his brother snarled.  As he wrapped a bandage around the feline, he added, "And why the hell would we name it afterME?!"

"Because it looks like you, fratello! The curl is even in the right spot!"

"Ugh… FINE. You name it whatever the heck you want to! I don't care." Romano placed the freshly healed animal onto the floor.

He watched the female cat as it inspected the bandages. He found it peculiar that the green headband fit so naturally around its head. The headband tied into a cute little ribbon at the end… What did that remind him of? Someone who wore it just like that…

"Bel…"

"Belle?" Veneziano piped up. "That's a wonderful name for her, fratello~!"

"W-Wha – ?" Romano was snapped out of his thoughts. "N-NO! I-I didn't mean…"

"If the mommy's name is Belle…" Veneziano pondered, "…then the daddy should be Tonio!"

"Don't name it–! GAH! Fine, fine, WHATEVER!" Romano folded his arms in disgust.

Veneziano giggled and went to pick up the male cat. It glanced at him warily, but then allowed itself to be scooped up and placed onto the kitchen tiles. It sauntered over to Belle, and gently examined her new bandage with its nose. Veneziano pulled Lovi out of the box and placed it next to its parents. Belle and Tonio immediately began to check the kitten over.

Romano sighed. "Who do you think they belong to?"

"I dunno," his brother replied, "but if they were out there by themselves, somebody must have abandoned them."

"I guess so…" Romano said slowly. It was starting to look like he would be keeping these cats longer than he expected. He seemed to be okay with it, though.

From his place on the kitchen floor, Lovi began to whine. He let out several high-pitched squeaks as a demand for attention. Tonio strode over to the kitten, and he nuzzled its neck in an attempt to quiet him down. When Lovi refused to stop his shrieking, Tonio gave Belle a quizzical look. Belle understood the signal and carefully rose to her feet. Tonio dashed out of the kitchen and into the living room. The female cat gently cuddled the whimpering kitten as she waited for her partner to return.

Tonio finally came back into the kitchen – towing a throw pillow from the couch with his teeth. He dragged it over to his family and proceeded to jump onto it. After thoroughly examining it for safety, he meowed, motioning for Belle to come over.

She picked Lovi up by the fur of his neck with her teeth. He immediately yelped and struggled in his mother's grip. However, the kitten was no match for his mother. Belle patiently waited for her kitten to settle down, and proceeded to bring him over to where Tonio was casually laying on the pillow.

"They'd better not tear up my pillows!" Romano cursed. Veneziano shushed him.

Belle dropped Lovi onto the pillow and curled up next to him. Tonio looked back at Romano warily, still not trusting him, and lay down by his family. Soon enough, Lovi quieted down and fell fast asleep.

"Aaawww~!" Veneziano squealed, ruining the moment. Romano facepalmed.

Just then, the phone rang.  "I wonder who that could be?" Veneziano pondered aloud, scurrying over to pick it up.

"Hello?" he asked. "…Oh, hi Big Brother Spain! … Oh, dear. What do they look like?"

Romano looked up from watching the cats, wondering what his brother was talking about. Veneziano quickly spun around, his eyes darting to the animals on the floor. He looked at each one carefully, and put the phone back up to his ear. "Actually, they're right here!"

"What?" Romano asked.

"I'm so glad you found them!" Spain cried happily, nuzzling Tonio's cheek with his own.

"Yes, thank you so much!" Belgium agreed, holding both Belle and Lovi in her arms. "They were out in the backyard when the storm hit. A bolt of lightning scared them off before we could bring them in. I thought we'd never find them…"

"Yeah, yeah, you're welcome," Romano grumbled, rubbing the back of his neck.

"And thanks for bandigin her up," Belgium added, stroking Belle's fur. "She must have scratched herself on the fence when she ran off."

"Ve~  Funny how we go the names right, too!" Veneziano added, reaching over to pet Lovi. Tonio growled, which made the Italian jump and pull his hand away.

"Ah… sorry," Spain apologized, keeping a firm grip on his cat. "Tonio gets a little overprotective sometimes…"

"You know," Belgium said, "Lovi's too young to be away from his parents right now, but once he's older, we can give him  to you if you'd like."

Romano blushed bright red. "Uh… I-I don't know… d-do you really think--?"

"He'd love to~!" Veneziano cheered, patting his brother's back. "Then maybe I could get a kitten, too!"

"Wha--?!"

"Then it's decided," Spain grinned.

"I didn't agree to anything, dammit!!" Romano cursed.

Belle purred softly, as if she was agreeing with her owner. Romano facepalmed again – but he was secretly happy that his brother had sent him out in the rain to get paints.
